The Data Scientist Intern position at Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is designed for currently enrolled students who are eager to support the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate. This role involves engaging in interdisciplinary projects that utilize predictive analytics, geospatial analysis, big data analysis, and various modeling techniques to address management issues and propose solutions. Interns will have the opportunity to work with both structured and unstructured data, develop algorithms, and communicate insights through data storytelling, all while enjoying a flexible work environment that encourages personal growth and career advancement.

  • Support and conduct projects requiring interdisciplinary methods including predictive analytics and geospatial analysis.
  • Develop and apply models and concepts to illuminate management issues and suggest solutions.
  • Elicit requirements from analytic team members and identify datasets for analysis.
  • Work with structured and unstructured data to identify trends and patterns.
  • Evaluate and recommend new methodologies and analytical tools.
  • Employ data modeling processes to create algorithms and predictive models.
  • Conduct data storytelling by generating reports and visualizations.
  • Currently enrolled, full-time student in a bachelor's degree program or above at an accredited university.
  • Familiarity with analytic tools such as Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, Java, SAS, Stata, SPSS, Tableau.
  • Ability to query, manipulate, and analyze large and complex datasets.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DHS suitability.
