The Data Scientist Intern in the Product R&D group at Align works closely with engineers from various backgrounds including biomechanics, materials, software, data analytics and clinical research. He/she is responsible to perform data analysis, build machine learning models, and extract product insights from Align's digital clinical database to support the company's product development activities and transform the orthodontic world with the Invisalign product. This is a unique opportunity to explore data insights in the dental world.

  • Extract parameters from SQL database and conduct data cleansing and feature engineering.
  • Build, optimize, validate, and interpret machine learning models or business logic.
  • Use innovative techniques to create and expand labeled data for supervised learning.
  • Identify key insights from analytical results, prepare well-documented reports/presentations.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Invisalign products and database parameters.
  • Transform business requirements to executable technical action items.
  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and meet critical deadlines.
  • Multi-task and prioritize requests to meet the most important and urgent business needs.
  • Must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor's, MS, or PhD degree with at least one quarter/semester to complete after internship.
  • Must be available to work full time during the summer months (May - August).
  • This position is located in our San Jose office and requires in-person attendance at the office 5 days a week from May-August 2026. Relocation assistance is not provided.
  • Relevant experience in data mining, statistical analysis, and machine learning modeling.
  • Proficiency with querying relational database (e.g. SQL).
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python or R.
  • Ability to learn quickly and absorb various techniques and knowledge.
  • Good communication skills to clarify business needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • To be detailed oriented and well-organized with great time management skills.
