About The Position

Trident Systems is seeking a Data Science Intern to support ongoing research in condition-based maintenance plus (CBM+) — a data-driven vehicle health monitoring strategy. The intern will work with Controller Area Network (CAN) bus telemetry data collected from multiple vehicles to develop and refine machine learning models capable of predicting maintenance needs and identifying anomalies in vehicle performance. This is an opportunity to apply data science skills to a real-world engineering problem with direct relevance to Department of Defense vehicle readiness initiatives.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Knowledge of machine learning fundamentals and experience applying data-driven modeling approaches to real-world datasets.
  • Proficiency in Python and common data science libraries including NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, and SciPy.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be geographically located within a commutable distance to the Trident Systems office in Fairfax, VA.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with time-series analysis, signal processing, or anomaly detection methods.
  • Familiarity with automotive systems, vehicle telematics, or CAN bus communication protocols.
  • Experience with data visualization tools or libraries (e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly) to communicate analytical findings.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and a drive to find meaningful patterns in complex, high-dimensional data.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and explores CAN bus telemetry data collected from multiple vehicles to develop predictive maintenance algorithms.
  • Develops, refines, and evaluates machine learning models using a data-driven approach to identify vehicle health and performance patterns.
  • Identifies signals of interest, normal operational patterns, and deviations or anomalies that indicate upcoming maintenance requirements.
  • Works with anonymized open-source vehicle telemetry data from a repository of data-logged vehicles to draw new inferences about vehicle health.
  • Collaborates with engineers and researchers to document findings, present results, and contribute to project reporting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • affirmative action and equal opportunity employer
  • Pay Transparency: The contractor will not discharge or in any other manner discriminate against employees or applicants because they have inquired about, discussed, or disclosed their own pay or the pay of another employee or applicant. However, employees who have access to the compensation information of other employees or applicants as a part of their essential job functions cannot disclose the pay of other employees or applicants to individuals who do not otherwise have access to compensation information, unless the disclosure is (a) in response to a formal complaint or charge, (b) in furtherance of an investigation, proceeding, hearing, or action, including an investigation conducted by the employer, or (c) consistent with the contractor’s legal duty to furnish information. 41 CFR 60-1.35(c)
