About The Position

The Data Reporter at Hearst Connecticut Media Group is responsible for producing high-quality journalism that leverages data to enhance storytelling. This role involves reporting, writing, data analysis, and collaboration with various newsroom teams to identify impactful stories and engage the audience effectively.

Requirements

• Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
• Strong news judgment and curiosity with attention to detail, especially in data validation.
• Ability to report stories quickly while maintaining fairness and accuracy.
• Knowledge of multimedia storytelling and social media engagement strategies.
• Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Time-management skills for handling daily and enterprise work.
• Knowledge of AI and machine learning.
• Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python or R.
• A sound understanding of basic statistical principles.

Responsibilities

• Reporting and writing both independently and collaboratively with other reporters.
• Web scraping to gather data for stories.
• Cleaning and analyzing complex data sets.
• Creating data visualizations and maps using tools like DataWrapper and Mapbox.
• Conceiving story ideas and collaborating with reporters, photographers, editors, and developers to enhance storytelling.
• Identifying and pursuing stories with potential real-world impact.
• Using analytics to understand audience needs and trends, particularly for subscribers.
• Researching, testing, and teaching new methods for working with data and documents.
