About The Position

Do you ever find yourself combing through free, public data for no reason other than your baseline curiosity? Maybe you downloaded your dating app data or plotted a map of all the bodegas in New York City just because you could. You believe that high-quality data can be a force multiplier for people organizing for change, and you occupy the connective space between data infrastructure and the people who depend on it, anticipating needs, resolving issues, and continuously improving how data supports civic work. As a Data Manager, you'll be one of the primary people responsible for our core data product, Atlas. You'll work with our Research, Data Science, and Product Teams to strengthen our data pipelines, enabling increased coverage, quality, and timeliness of data that supports our partners' electoral, organizing, and advocacy efforts. Your day-to-day work will include building data models, running operational data processes, documenting requirements, implementing data and code fixes, and supporting downstream consumers. You'll also help prioritize enhancements and improvements to the tools and methodologies we use. This role is for expert problem solvers familiar with modern databases and SQL who can dig into data requirements, discrepancies, and mysteries. We'll rely on you to constantly hunt for issues rather than waiting to be reactive.

  • Familiarity with ELT/analytics engineering patterns (e.g., dbt, dimensional modeling, data contracts);
  • Proficiency in SQL, including complex queries and large dataset manipulation;
  • Proficiency in Python or other scripting languages;

  • Experience using AI-assisted tools to enhance development workflows;
  • Comfort working with semi-structured or unstructured data sources; and/or

Responsibilities

  • Steward core data assets: Maintain and steward the data that powers Atlas. Contribute to pipelines and infrastructure alongside engineers, and own data quality and integrity long-term.
  • Design data models: Develop and maintain foundational data models, tables, metrics, and transformations that serve as source of truth for the data product.
  • Be the data expert: Develop deep expertise in the civic data that powers Atlas, including metadata and data contracts. Understand what partners and internal teams need, and find ways to make data more accurate, accessible, and usable.
  • Support data consumers: Help researchers, product owners, and other downstream consumers understand data logic and how data flows through Atlas. Build relationships across teams to ensure collaborative problem-solving.
  • Resolve data issues: Investigate and fix issues when they arise, coordinating with internal stakeholders and external parties (e.g., data vendors, technology partners, etc.).
  • Improve operations: Proactively identify opportunities to enhance data quality, coverage, or timeliness. Find ways to make data processes more efficient and implement improvements to tools and methodologies.
