About The Position

Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) is a trade association located in New York City representing more than 200 hospitals, health systems, and continuing care facilities in New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. GNYHA is a dynamic, constantly evolving center for health care advocacy and expertise, but our core mission—helping hospitals deliver the finest patient care in the most cost-effective way—never changes. GNYHA’s advocacy takes many forms, from representing our members’ interest at the Federal and State governments to working alongside them to improve quality and patient safety. GNYHA is seeking a data intern to work with the Finance, Economics, Surveys & Outcomes Research department for a paid opportunity this summer. Reporting to the Vice President of Health Economics, the data intern will assist with a range of computing tasks in support of quantitative research.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student, either at the bachelor’s or associate’s level with a strong focus on quantitative research/data analysis/data science, preferably with interests in a relevant field, including but not limited to economics, public health, public policy, health administration, or health care management
  • Strong interest in computing technology as it relates to data processing and data analytics (e.g. database design/management, ETL pipeline, cloud computing, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Excel, SQL, a programming/scripting language (e.g. Python, Ruby, SAS, C#, C++, etc.), Word, PowerPoint
  • Aptitude for quantitative analysis using large datasets
  • Superior writing and oral communication skills; ability to explain complex topics in an understandable manner
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to efficiently manage projects with direction and oversight

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a database to facilitate the identification of hospitals in the nation, with an emphasis on those in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, along with descriptive information, and work with the department to develop processes to ensure that the database can be easily updated after the internship period
  • Evaluating alternative platforms to facilitate sharing of this database among GNYHA staff as a centralized single source of truth
  • Helping with the design of the data model for a data warehouse/database to host longitudinal patient level records and geographic support data to enable staff to perform spatial analyses
  • Supporting research activities of the department including analyses of various health care trends and policy issues to support GNYHA’s advocacy
