About The Position

The Data Engineering Manager is a hands‑on player/coach who owns Wrench Group’s core data foundation; connecting brand, operational, and customer data into governed, reliable products that the business can trust and use. In this role, you lead a small team while actively designing how data moves through the enterprise, establishing clear methodologies for access, quality, monitoring, security, and cost. Providing guardrails to ensure consistent, well‑documented datasets are available across our brands. You partner closely with the BI & Analytics team, enabling them with certified datasets and predictable refreshes to accelerate reporting and predictive models, improve operational clarity, and elevate customer experience, all while fostering a culture of transparency, reliability, and continuous improvement. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s in CS/Engineering (or related).
  • 5+ years of data/analytics engineering; 2+ years in lead or mentoring capacity.
  • Hands‑on Azure Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, SQL, Workflows/DLT), Python/PySpark, SQL.
  • Experience with ADLS Gen2, Synapse serverless/SQL, and integrating CRM/ERP/CDP sources (e.g., ServiceTitan, FiveTran, APIs).
  • Proven delivery of BI‑ready, indexed datasets and optimized data models to support Power BI reporting, without ownership of semantic models.
  • Experience working within matrix organizations to deliver cross‑department data integrations.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder influence, and outcome‑
  • Experience with vendor relationships (Azure Databricks, license partners, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Data Mesh, Data Products: domain‑owned products, data contracts, SLAs/SLOs, certification via Unity Catalog.
  • Unity Catalog + Purview Governance: RLS/CLS, lineage, glossary/classification, governed naming; audit‑ready policies.
  • Delta Lake Lifecycle: partitioning, OPTIMIZE/ZORDER, retention/vacuum, SCD/CDC patterns; performance for Databricks SQL.
  • Security & Identity (Entra ID): RBAC/service principals, Key Vault, private endpoints, cluster policies, auditing.
  • Obervability & Cost: Azure Monitor/Log Analytics, refresh SLAs, cost dashboards; autoscaling/Photon, workload separation.

Responsibilities

  • Design & build pipelines on Azure Databricks (Delta Lake, Workflows/DLT, Autoloader) into ADLS Gen2; optimize storage/compute.
  • Manage & mentor one data engineer; set code standards, reviews, CI/CD, and reliability SLOs.
  • Implement Unity Catalog governance (catalogs/schemas, RLS/CLS, grants) with Microsoft Purview lineage & glossary.
  • Define data contracts, naming/metadata standards, and automated data quality checks with remediation playbooks.
  • Publish certified datasets/SQL endpoints for BI; maintain source-level security (RLS/CLS) and refresh orchestration.
  • Security & Identity: Entra ID RBAC, service principals, Key Vault secrets, private endpoints, cluster policies, auditing.
  • Observability & Cost: Azure Monitor/Log Analytics telemetry, alerting, cost dashboards, autoscaling/Photon tuning.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Finance, Operations, and BI on priorities, dependencies, and change management.
