By building and operating scalable, well-governed data platforms, this leader enables capabilities such as AI-assisted workflows, advanced analytics, product intelligence, and real-time insights that reduce administrative burden, improve engagement, and support better clinical and business outcomes across the urgent care ecosystem. This role also champions a forward-looking mindset: embracing AI and automation as accelerators of engineering productivity, decision-making, and team effectiveness, while guiding others in adopting these capabilities responsibly and effectively. Position Overview: The Data Engineering Manager is responsible for leading, scaling, and evolving a high-performing data engineering team that builds and operates the company’s data platform. This role combines people leadership, technical depth, and strategic thinking. The manager owns the design and delivery of robust, secure, and scalable data pipelines and platforms while partnering closely with product, analytics, architecture, and business leaders to execute the enterprise data strategy. This leader sets technical standards, establishes best practices, and ensures the team delivers high-quality data products that are reliable, observable, and aligned with business priorities in a regulated healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of experience in data engineering or related technical roles.
  • Two years of people leadership experience managing and developing engineers.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating scalable data pipelines and platforms.
  • Strong experience with cloud-based data platforms (AWS preferred; Azure or GCP acceptable).
  • Hands-on experience with modern data technologies such as Snowflake, Spark, Kafka, and related ecosystems.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (Python, .NET, or equivalent).
  • Experience implementing data quality, governance, and compliance controls.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and learning mindset, particularly around AI-driven development, automation, and analytics.
  • Ability to lead teams through change, adopting new tools and ways of working as technology evolves.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate between technical and business audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple initiatives in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular feedback and performance reviews, and actively support career development and growth.
  • Build a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe team environment that encourages innovation and high-quality execution.
  • Anticipate staffing needs, participate in hiring, and ensure the team is appropriately resourced for current and future demands.
  • Own the architecture, design, and delivery of scalable, resilient data pipelines for batch and streaming use cases.
  • Ensure reliable ingestion, transformation, and storage of data across internal and external sources.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, documentation, CI/CD, and operational excellence.
  • Implement robust data validation, testing, monitoring, and alerting to ensure data accuracy, freshness, and reliability.
  • Optimize pipeline performance, cost, latency, and scalability across the data platform.
  • Partner with data leadership, architecture, analytics, and product teams to define and execute the data engineering roadmap aligned to business objectives.
  • Translate business needs into well-defined technical solutions and prioritized delivery plans.
  • Manage project timelines, dependencies, and tradeoffs while balancing speed, quality, and sustainability.
  • Ensure bi-weekly reporting and scorecards to show value and progress Communicate status, risks, and progress clearly to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with software engineering, analytics, product, and downstream consumers to ensure data solutions are usable, trusted, and fit for purpose.
  • Enable self-service analytics and data consumption through well-modeled, well-documented, and discoverable data assets.
  • Work closely with architects to evolve platform capabilities around scalability, availability, security, and performance.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and regulatory requirements (HIPAA and related standards).
  • Partner with governance and security teams to implement data access controls, lineage, and auditability.
  • Champion data quality, stewardship, and accountability across the organization.
  • Advocate for and evaluate modern data engineering tools, frameworks, and cloud-native technologies.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development, automation, and analytics to improve delivery speed, reliability, and team efficiency.
  • Guide and mentor engineers in the responsible and effective use of AI tools in design, development, testing, and operations.
  • Stay current on industry trends in data engineering, analytics, and AI, translating emerging capabilities into practical improvements.
  • Drive continuous improvement through retrospectives, metrics, automation, and platform evolution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
