About The Position

The Department Life Technology Solutions (LTS) is a practice within Milliman, one of the largest actuarial consulting firms in the world. Our system, Integrate, is a market-leading application used throughout the life insurance industry for activities such as financial modelling and reporting, business planning and reporting, and insurance product pricing. Our professional services team sits within LTS and primarily consists of actuarial consultants with strong technical capabilities. The Developers within our team provide more advanced technical capabilities in areas less actuarial in nature, strengthen collaboration and coordination with development, and provide a bridge between professional services and development. The Role As a Data Engineering Intern, you will work closely with our team to support the design, development, and optimization of data pipelines and infrastructure. In this role, you’ll be provided with a hands-on experience with modern data technologies and methodologies in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, data science, or finance, statistics, or mathematics with a computer science minor.
  • Experience with Python or R (preferred)
  • Experience developing and debugging a program
  • Experience with PowerBI reporting or the desire to develop this skill
  • Experience with SQL (preferred)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A desire to contribute to the success of our projects and deliver value for our clients.
  • Ability to complete project deliverables, meet deadlines, and ensure compliance with quality procedures. 
  • Excellent project management skills, including communication and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated individual with a sense of intellectual curiosity and a results-oriented work ethic.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and ask the right questions to learn about the work and your involvement in it.
  • Interest in a software engineering career demonstrated by previous internships, professional experience, and/or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in building, maintaining, and optimizing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and data pipelines.
  • Support the integration of data from multiple sources (structured and unstructured) into centralized data stores.
  • Collaborate with data engineers and actuaries to ensure data quality, consistency, and reliability.
  • Help with the documentation of data processes, workflows, and best practices.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and resolving data-related issues.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of database schemas and data models with the support of your team.
  • Run exploratory data analysis to validate pipeline outputs and provide actionable insights.
  • Learn and work with Azure cloud data platforms and big data tools as applicable.
  • Adhere to data governance and security standards.
