As a Data Science Intern within Valmont’s Agriculture Division Software Engineering Department, you’ll play an important role in advancing data-driven decision-making and irrigation optimization. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with cloud-based data systems, developing predictive models, and collaborating with engineering and product teams to deliver impactful data insights. Valmont’s internship program provides a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing, and interaction with senior leaders across the company.

  • Extract, clean, and preprocess data from Azure-based databases
  • Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities
  • Engineer features for predictive modeling and decision-making
  • Develop and evaluate machine learning models to support irrigation optimization
  • Document methodologies, findings, and present insights to key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate data solutions
  • Identify data quality issues and propose process improvements
  • Junior, Senior, or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation
  • Strong programming skills in Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib/Seaborn)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure
  • Strong experience in data cleaning, feature engineering, and model development, with the ability to interpret data, solve problems analytically, and translate findings into actionable insights
  • Experience working with time-series or sensor data, particularly in agriculture or environmental contexts, is preferred
  • Familiarity with geospatial analysis tools such as GeoPandas or QGIS is preferred
  • Understanding of precision agriculture, irrigation systems, or agronomy preferred
  • Exposure to MLOps practices and deploying machine learning models in production environments is preferred
  • Experience with dashboarding and data visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Plotly Dash preferred
  • Paid internship with meaningful, career-related work experience
