About The Position

This position supports data engineering for the VISTA (Vehicle Importation Safety and Tracking Application) project at NHTSA. The role focuses on managing large-scale XML data processing pipelines, PostgreSQL database optimization, and building data reporting solutions from ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) data. This is a specialized mid-level data engineering role that performs Operations and Maintenance and Development/Modernization/Enhancement work.

Requirements

  • Database & SQL (Expert Level)
  • PostgreSQL administration and optimization
  • Complex SQL query writing and optimization
  • Stored procedure development and debugging (PL/pgSQL)
  • Database schema design and normalization
  • Understanding of indexes, query plans, and performance tuning Data Processing
  • Python 3.13 for data engineering tasks
  • XML parsing and validation at scale
  • ETL pipeline design and troubleshooting
  • Data quality validation and error handling
  • Experience processing millions of records efficiently AWS Services (Working Knowledge)
  • RDS PostgreSQL
  • S3 for data storage
  • Lambda functions for data processing
  • SQS for pipeline orchestration
  • Basic understanding of AWS data services
  • Tools & Environment
  • Git/GitHub Enterprise for version control
  • Windows 11 cmd prompt environment
  • VS Code with Python extensions
  • AWS CLI for database and S3 access

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data visualization and dashboard creation across multiple platforms (AWS QuickSight, Tableau, Power BI, Python libraries such as matplotlib/plotly)
  • Understanding of data visualization best practices and ability to translate business requirements into visual analytics
  • Experience with AI/ML model integration and data quality for ML workflows
  • Familiarity with AWS Bedrock or similar AI services
  • Understanding of document processing and OCR technologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail for data quality issues
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Clear documentation practices and ability to explain technical data issues to non-technical stakeholders
  • Diplomatic communication skills and ability to navigate challenging stakeholder relationships while maintaining project momentum
