The Data Engineer role at American Express is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to help shape experiences for one of the world's top brands! We seek a thought-leader and a problem-solver who can blend business, technical, and industry standard methodologies. Our 10-week Summer Internship Program runs from June to August. This program will provide you with real, on-the-job work experience; giving you the skills and experience to help you accelerate in your studies and future career!

Requirements

  • Master's degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027
  • Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other technical field

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in SQL and Python (or any other programming language like Java)
  • Proven interest in technologies and customer-driven design
  • Willing to take risks, experiment, and share fresh perspectives
  • Strong analytical/quantitative and problem-solving skills with the ability to distill complex concepts or problems.
  • Independent thinker with intellectual curiosity and desire to continually learn about the changing payments landscape and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to collaborate with and build strong relationships with leaders, colleagues in different time zones, and cross-functional partners to deliver value.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated resilience, proactive problem solving, 'can do' attitude, and optimism in changing circumstances.
  • Comfort with challenging the status quo and driving continuous process improvement
  • Proficiency in analytical and presentation tools, including MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Big Data / NoSQL design and development with variety of data stores (document, column family, graph, etc.)
  • Knowledge of database management system products and ecosystem - e.g., storage formats, access algorithms, data management processes, administration, data maintenance, replication, high availability, encryption, etc
  • Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational & non-relational databases

  • Design and optimization of data architectures and pipelines
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with business needs and enterprise standards
  • Foster innovation and best practices in data infrastructure
  • Executing Big Data management strategies through partitioning and indexing solutions
