About The Position

Obra is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to serve as part of an IT-Solutions team supporting our data ecosystem in Snowflake. As a member of the Data Team, this individual will have the primary responsibility to ensure appropriate architecture, successful data processing, and governance while continuously improving team tools, processes, and procedures. This position is responsible for developing new solutions & resolving issues using standard Snowflake tools and best practices in collaboration with the IT team. Other duties include creating and testing new data pipelines, system monitoring, and analytic solutions; leading team members to improve technical skills, learn best practices, and collaborate to improve the maturity and scalability of systems. The candidate must demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of Operational databases (SQL Server, MongoDB), Cloud analytics platform (AWS + Snowflake), Modern data integration and orchestration tools (Fivetran, Dagster), Data activation and reverse ETL (Hightouch), SaaS data sources such as Salesforce. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that combines data engineering, database architecture, platform strategy, and data governance This position is based in the Indianapolis office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information management, computer sciences or technically related area
  • 10+ years in data engineering, database architecture, or data platform leadership roles
  • Deep experience with SQL Server architecture, performance, and HA/DR design
  • Experience supporting MongoDB in production environments
  • Strong hands-on expertise with Snowflake architecture and optimization
  • Experience building or modernizing data platforms on AWS
  • Experience with modern data stack tools such as Fivetran,Dagster, or similar
  • Strong understanding of data security, access control, and governance in regulated environments
  • Experience working with system integrators or external partners during large platform initiatives
  • Experience using DevOps, release management, CI/CD
  • Experience with cloud-based orchestration tools for monitoring and lineage.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team to deliver high-quality insights and data solutions
  • Recognizes, identifies, triages and resolves processing and/or data issues; escalates to the appropriate resource where required.
  • Collaborates with power- and end-users to resolve processing and/or data issues.
  • Performs system and component level, coding, testing, and documentation for application development projects.
  • Assists in development of project efforts providing estimates for development and documentation.
  • Identifies and recommends methods for improved automation, faster data processing, better monitoring, and process transparency across all stakeholders.
  • Ensures existing standards and methodologies are in place and works together with the development team to identify and implement enhanced standards and methodologies for development practices.
  • Provides feedback to the development team regarding bug fixes, enhancement requests and other issues.
  • Recommend strategies, procedures, and new technologies for implementation
  • Lead architecture and governance of Snowflake, including role-based access model and security design, data sharing and secure collaboration patterns, warehouse sizing, performance optimization, and cost controls
  • Define standards for ELT/ETL pipelines and transformation frameworks
  • Provide architectural leadership for SQL Server workloads hosted in AWS
  • High availability and disaster recovery strategy
  • Performance optimization and workload isolation
  • Backup, restore, and security patterns (with MSP collaboration)
  • Define integration patterns to move operational data into the analytics platform
  • Define enterprise standards for SaaS data ingestion using Fivetran
  • Oversee architecture and best practices for Dagster (or equivalent orchestration tools)
  • Ensure pipelines are reliable, observable, cost-efficient, and secure
  • Establish monitoring and failure-handling standards for all data workflows
  • Define transformation and modeling strategy using modern ELT approaches
  • Ensure business-ready, governed semantic data models are created for analytics and reporting
  • Drive consistency in core business definitions (e.g., policy, premium, customer)
  • Govern the use of Hightouch (or similar tools) to push curated data back into operational systems
  • Ensure reverse ETL processes comply with data classification, access controls, and audit requirements
  • Define monitoring and approval processes for outbound data movement
  • Ensure sensitive insurance and financial data is properly protected
  • Ensure Access controls and audit logging are enforced across platforms
  • Work with system integrators building AWS/Snowflake foundations
  • Review and approve architecture designs
  • Ensure documentation, standards, and knowledge transfer are completed for long-term ownership
  • Collaborate with actuarial, underwriting, finance, and operations teams to ensure the platform supports; regulatory reporting, risk modeling, and operational performance insights.
