The TOPS (Technology and Operations) Vendor Management team is modernizing its SI Partner Engagement process, reducing manual steps and handoffs through data driven automation. As a Data Engineer – Process Automation Intern, this internship is designed to mirror the foundational responsibilities of a Data Engineer I, offering structured mentorship and scoped ownership while emphasizing learning, guided execution, and practical delivery. Interns will work with real enterprise data, documented process maps, and defined automation use cases to design, test, and implement AIdriven and automated solutions that streamline key workflows—from contracting and onboarding to invoicing and project closeout—while collaborating across technical and business teams to improve the efficiency, scalability, and analytics capabilities of vendor management operations. Program Details and Requirements: Premera’s Summer Internship Program is June 15th – August 21st 2026. To be eligible for the program, you must currently be enrolled in either an undergraduate or graduate degree program or have recently obtained your degree (within the last 12 months). This is a hybrid internship program located on our campus in Mountlake Terrace, WA.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master's degree program or have recently obtained your degree (within the last 12 months). (Required)
  • Experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with databases and data flow systems.
  • Foundational understanding of data concepts such as tables, joins, transformations, and data quality (academic or practical).
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn enterprise scale data and automation patterns.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with different AI capabilities and/or experience building agentic AI.

Responsibilities

  • Translate documented business processes into logical data flows, identifying inputs, outputs, dependencies, and automation opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for AIdriven solutions and intelligent automation.
  • Support the design, prototyping, testing, and refinement of automation tools.
  • Assist in designing and validating basic data pipelines and transformations (e.g., sourcetotarget mappings, data quality checks, and simple orchestration logic) under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Use structured query logic to explore, validate, and analyze process and operational data to support automation and reporting use cases.
  • Contribute to existing process documentation, metrics baselines, and automation backlogs that have been established as part of pre internship readiness work.
  • Produce artifacts commonly expected of early career Data Engineers, such as data flow diagrams, annotated queries, and clear technical documentation.
  • Participate in structured team ceremonies (intake reviews, solution walkthroughs, and retrospectives) to gain exposure to enterprise delivery and data engineering operating models.
