About The Position

Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for a Data Engineer Intern to join our Data Engineering department. This position is a part-time (20 hours per week) opportunity based out of our regional office located in Washington, D.C with a hybrid work model. Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group is comprised of more than 1,700 Permanente physicians and nearly 300 staff professionals who come together to make a positive impact on the health and lives of more than 800,000 members in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Reporting to the Data Engineering Manager, the Data Engineer Intern will support the design, development, and automation of modern data and analytics solutions. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience building scalable data pipelines, web services, and tools that empower analytics teams and improve enterprise workflows. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with real-world healthcare data in a collaborative, fast-paced, and mission-driven environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a related field
  • Experience with Python or similar programming languages through coursework, projects, or internships
  • Working knowledge of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience or familiarity with SQL, databases, and data structures
  • Comfort working in a Linux-based, command-line environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a natural curiosity for learning
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing project needs
  • Must be able to commute to Washington D.C., at least twice a month
  • Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area
  • Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment
  • Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, and maintain web services and applications using modern, containerized microservice architectures
  • Build and support ETL processes across multiple systems using Python and SQL
  • Design logical data schemas and database structures to enable efficient data storage and access
  • Create reusable Python frameworks and libraries that simplify development for other team members
  • Integrate systems through REST APIs to automate administrative and data management tasks
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues while continuously improving system reliability
  • Partner with data engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to identify opportunities for workflow optimization
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
