About The Position

The Data Engineer III is part of the Data Analytics team and is responsible for executing and contributing to the design, build, and sustainment of high-quality data infrastructure that enables reliable analytics and business insight across the organization. This role transforms complex, raw data into well-structured, governed data assets that support modeling, reporting, and advanced analysis, while contributing to the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of analytics platforms. The Data Engineer III partners closely with the Business Intelligence team and business stakeholders to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and usability, and to identify opportunities to improve data performance and operational efficiency. This position ensures analytics platforms consistently deliver dependable data for internal reporting and externally facing analytics. This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon’s corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Requirements

  • Advanced SQL skills
  • Advanced experience with data warehousing and pipelines (ETLs, job scheduling, maintenance, monitoring, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, and AWS data services (S3, Glue, etc.)
  • Competency with relational database architecture and design
  • Experience with SQL performance tuning, role-based access, indexing
  • Experience using git, CI/CD, and IaC tools like GitHub, Harness, and Terraform
  • Agile software development best practices
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and organization skills
  • Experience supporting data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI)

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced experience with cloud-based solutions (Snowflake, AWS cloud services)
  • Experience with healthcare claims data
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming skills (e.g. Python)
  • Knowledge of Healthcare data standards (e.g. HL7, EDI, FHIR)
  • Event-driven data streaming platforms (e.g. Kafka)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain high complexity data features.
  • Troubleshoot and debug high complexity problems.
  • Support other team members in feature development with Paired Programming, reviewing PRs, etc.
  • Monitor, maintain, and improve existing production data pipelines and processes.
  • Build new reliable, scalable, efficient ETL processes extracting data from multiple sources.
  • Own and refine requirements of assigned tickets independently.
  • Apply understanding of Avalon’s business knowledge when developing features and refining tickets.
  • Effectively communicates risks and dependencies within and across teams.
  • Effectively explain complex problems and quantify the value proposition of a feature.
  • Support analytical teams, tools, and programs using Data Warehouse products.
  • Automate data pipelines, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Participate in code review, working to identify, debug, and version control code changes.
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand their data needs and deliver quality data products.
  • Collaborate with team members on several projects at once.
  • Employ strong analytical and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Curate data for advanced analytics and data science.
  • Ensure data accuracy, quality, security, integrity, and reliability.
  • Maintain documentation of data, ETLs, processes, repositories, issues, etc.
  • Evaluates new technologies and tools.
  • Participate in Agile team ceremonies.
