About The Position

The Pima County Information Technology Department is seeking a self-motivated, thorough, disciplined, and perceptive individual for the role of Data Engineer I. The ideal entry level candidate will provide independent technical and analytical support on specific application system activities involving the design, development, construction, and ongoing support of systems, processes, or methods to deliver critical reporting solutions. Services complex customer segment application systems and databases of either the Pima County Information Technology (IT) Department, central Finance and Risk Management Department, within an Elected Official's IT team, or other department/work unit approved by the County Administrator. This role requires close collaboration with other project teams, so strong interpersonal skills are essential. This position is on site with the possibility of part-time telecommuting after 6 months of initial probation. This is an in-office position located in Tucson, AZ, and cannot be remote. The Information Technology Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or technical trade school with a major in computer science, computer engineering, management information systems (MIS), or a closely related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment U four years of work experience in software development and maintenance U one year of work experience in the development and maintenance of database systems.(Experience requirements may be achieved concurrently.) (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • OR: Two years of experience with Pima County in a Data Analyst II position or closely related classification as determined by the department head.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year experience with planning and creating new applications to completion and working on data layer/business logic/UI.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with using Git for version control and Jira for issue tracking and project management.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with deployment pipelines.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Snowflake.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with reporting and analytics tools such as Power BI, Qlik Sense, or Business Object.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development of database requirements and design specifications
  • Implements database changes based on application development or enhancements
  • Utilizes database management systems (DBMS) software, application software, and other software related to DBMS administration
  • Monitors DBMS security using appropriate protocols
  • Works with system administration of database servers to assist in function optimally with the DBMS
  • Writes and maintains database documentation appropriate to area of assignment
  • Develops custom or ad hoc reports using industry-standard tools
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned in support of the overall goals and functions of both the Human Resources Department and Pima County
  • Supports the maintenance and basic operation of relational databases across assigned platforms
  • Assists in gathering database requirements and contributing to design specifications
  • Creates simple database objects based on established models and performs routine data updates or changes
  • Assists with installing or upgrading database-related software under supervision
  • Monitors database security following established procedures and escalates issues as needed
  • Performs routine system administration tasks on database servers to support performance and reliability
  • Drafts and updates technical documentation with guidance from senior engineers
  • Monitors storage utilization and participates in backup, archiving, and recovery activities as directed
  • Generates basic custom or ad hoc reports using standard reporting tools
