The Data Center Operating Engineer is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing/piping equipment, machinery and controls located in the interior and exterior of the building. This role involves monitoring operations and conducting a routine and ongoing assessment of the building systems operations and performance, performing tests, rounds, and analyzing data to ensure the proper functioning of departmental equipment.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in a data center/critical facility, including CRAC Units, UPS Systems, emergency generators, and switch-gear.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, monitoring, and performing preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems including fire/life safety, mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, controls), electrical (lighting, UPS, PDU, generators, primary switch gear), emergency backup systems and hot water systems.
  • Monitoring operation, adjusting, and maintaining refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; boilers, and ventilating and hot water heaters; pumps, valves, piping and filters; other mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Recording readings and making adjustments where necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment.
  • Analyzing the operation of various systems, determining the cause of any problems/malfunctions and taking corrective action as required.
  • Installing and repairing plumbing/piping/tubing; wiring single and three phase motors; running conduit; pulling wiring to machinery, motors, operating parts, etc.
  • Installing and rebuilding pumps and motors; replacing bearings in all types of motors; replacing seals on pumps; installing and repairing piping, valves, filters, hot water systems and associated controls.
  • Assisting other mechanics and operators with major repairs and maintenance of building and equipment.
  • Operating and supporting the oversight of maintenance of critical equipment including UPS systems, generators, chillers and critical air conditioning units.
  • Complying with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe workplace.
  • Overseeing the activities of contractors working within the building either as representatives of the building itself or tenants operating within the buildings.
  • Keeping records of buildings rounds and readings, all engineering logs and engineering data sheets.
  • Providing advance training and notification to all contractors regarding the building's critical functions and the work they are to perform.
  • Understanding and complying with emergency escalation procedures.
  • Ensuring that the Working in Critical Areas Standards is a well-understood process among the building staff, engineers and contractors.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to Critical System Standards.
  • Performing additional job duties as requested.
