The Systems Engineer II will serve as TTI's data architect and is responsible for the management of TTI's entire data infrastructure, ensuring it aligns with business goals, supports data governance, and promotes data consistency and accessibility across systems. As a strategic research partner, the data architect will also provide services to research teams that address complex data management solutions using cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure Databricks, OneLake, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Snowflake, etc. As a member of the cloud solutions team, the data architect will work cohesively with other team members to develop and implement cloud strategies, support AI initiatives, architectures, and integrations for TTI's business and research areas. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

  • Coordinate with cloud solutions team to develop overarching data management strategy and supporting architectures.
  • Ensure data architecture and storage solutions support agency business, data governance, and strategic research objectives
  • Ensure data architecture, storage solutions, and pipelines can scale to meet AI solution requirements
  • Provide leadership on best practices and emerging data technologies
  • Develop and maintain data repositories and catalogs
  • Ensure datasets are documented for discoverability and reuse
  • Assist research teams in locating and retrieving relevant data
  • Facilitate access and the efficient movement of data into and out of solutions
  • Facilitate unifying multi-source datasets for AI model training and inference
  • Ensure data is classified and tagged for sensitivity and retention purposes
  • Respond swiftly to system outages and disruptions
  • Ensures the accuracy and effectiveness of the services to meet business and research requirements.
  • Clearly communicates with IT and non-IT professionals to ensure effective use of services
  • Serves as Tier II/III contact for management of cloud and non-cloud data management solutions systems
  • Research problems and recommend solutions for partners
  • Maintain detailed technical documentation, runbooks, and architectural diagrams for operational continuity
  • Monitor and manage data storage usage and costs
  • Analyze cost utilization reports to Identify cost-inefficient areas and potential cost-saving opportunities
  • Develop and implement cost optimization strategies for resources and projects.
  • Estimate data storage costs for research proposals.
  • Builds and maintains a positive relationship with other agency units and personnel. Maintains positive relationships with external partners that assist in the development, funding, public relations, and overall success of TTI and NIS.
  • Ensures solutions are compliant with Agency and System regulations.
  • Participates in IT Service Management Processes
  • Develops and leads projects in support of Division goals
  • Participates in training and professional development sessions.
  • Serves on committees inside and outside of NIS and TTI to develop technical standards and direction
  • Create system related documents/reports including installation procedures, control documents, and test plans in compliance with agency, departmental, and project management standards
  • Serves as Tier II/III contact for agency communication and collaboration systems
  • Monitors and manages system certificates for agency infrastructure
  • May direct the efforts of one or more individuals (NIS student technicians and interns)
  • Occasional after hours on-call support for agency infrastructure and services
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Four years of related experience
  • Ability to perform common office functions.
  • Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Experience using AI tools to increase productivity or create workflow efficiencies.
  • Proven track record of designing scalable, high-performance data solutions.
  • Experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau) and analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with data governance, data catalogs, and data security best practices.
