About The Position

The Student Intern will support electric planning, reliability, and performance reporting by working with operational and program datasets to produce clear, repeatable analytics outputs. Typical work includes cleaning and validating data, writing SQL queries, developing Python-based analysis workflows, and creating publication-ready charts and reporting tables for internal decision-making. This is a hands-on, learning-focused role suited for a student who enjoys translating messy real-world data into understandable metrics, trends, and actionable insights. Deliverables may include recurring reports, analysis summaries, and documented methods that improve consistency and traceability of internal reporting.

Requirements

  • Academic status at an accredited college or university taking courses as a full-time student leading to a Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering , Information Systems / Business Analytics, Economics (quantitative) degree or a degree in a field related to the work which is performed.
  • Strong Excel skills (filters, pivot tables, formulas; ability to work with large spreadsheets). Working knowledge of SQL (select statements, joins, aggregations; ability to produce clean reporting outputs).
  • Working knowledge of Python for data analysis (pandas; Jupyter notebooks or equivalent workflow).
  • Familiarity with data quality concepts (validation checks, handling missing values, consistent definitions/metrics).
  • Ability to produce clear charts and summaries using common tools (Excel charts, Python plotting libraries, or similar).
  • Strong analytical reasoning and attention to detail; able to spot inconsistencies and resolve data issues.
  • Ability to translate a business/operational question into a measurable metric and a repeatable analysis approach.
  • Clear communicator who can summarize results for non-technical audiences (written and verbal).
  • Self-directed and organized; able to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and ask good questions when requirements are unclear.
  • Professional judgment with sensitive or operationally relevant information, follows data-handling expectations.
  • Collaborative mindset; able to work effectively with engineers, planners, operations staff, and supervisors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of energy or utility industry concepts (preferred but not required).

Responsibilities

  • Query, extract, and prepare data from internal sources using SQL and/or structured data exports (CSV, Excel, system reports).
  • Clean, validate, and standardize datasets using Python (e.g., pandas) and Excel to improve consistency and reliability of metrics.
  • Build repeatable analysis workflows (scripts/notebooks) to support recurring reporting and ad hoc investigations.
  • Develop performance metrics and reporting tables (e.g., reliability trends, work volumes, inspection/program progress, operational indicators) in collaboration with staff.
  • Create clear visualizations (charts/graphs) and concise written summaries for internal reporting and presentations.
  • Support basic forecasting and trend analysis using explainable methods (e.g., time-series trends, regression, scenario comparisons), as appropriate.
  • Document data sources, assumptions, and methodology so results are traceable and reusable by the team.
  • Participate in team check-ins and present work products to stakeholders with a focus on clarity and accuracy.
