About The Position

The duration of the internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States. A full-time internship is for an initial period of two months and a part-time internship is for an initial of four months. Internships may be extended up to maximum six months depending on the needs of the Division. This position is located within the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) in the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), Department of Peace Operations (DPO), United Nations (UN) Secretariat. SSRU coordinates the United Nations system - as well as national and international partners - on security sector reform and governance. The team leads in the development of research, knowledge, guidance, education, training, and advocacy. It supports United Nations field missions, resident coordinators and country teams with strategic and technical advice, as well as rapidly deployable short-term assistance. We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. An academic background in computer science, analytics, statistics, information management, business analysis or related field is beneficial. Skills in identifying and documenting workflows. Skills in data management, data visualization and data cleaning. Conceptual knowledge of data ETL, data governance and promoting data literacy. Within delegated authority, the Data Analytics Intern will be responsible for the following duties:

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme.
  • Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts.
  • Ability to design surveys and polls.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • An academic background in computer science, analytics, statistics, information management, business analysis or related field is beneficial.
  • Skills in identifying and documenting workflows.
  • Skills in data management, data visualization and data cleaning.
  • Conceptual knowledge of data ETL, data governance and promoting data literacy.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the mapping and analysis of SSRU data management practice.
  • Assist in drafting guidelines for data collection and management on field missions' work in SSR
  • Support engagement with the UN SSR Community of Practice and Interagency SSR Taskforce on data management.
  • Create dashboards to visualize SSR activities, country portfolios, and thematic data.
  • Assist in developing presentations on data-related aspects, e.g. toolkits for data collection or the usage of digital tools
  • Support in identifying, documenting and developing automated workflows, e.g. with PowerAutomate.
  • Develop surveys, prototype tools, provide analysis, and generate reports with outcomes.
  • Support with creating data flows and pipelines that harness streamlined access and analysis.
  • Assist in conducting analysis to serve in reports, analytical papers, policy briefs, and factsheets.
  • Assist with the development of data visualizations for analysis and communication.
  • Assist with data aggregation and the development of interactive analytic reports.
  • Performing other duties as requested by the supervisor.
