About The Position

Please note: Ability to work on site at the San Francisco VA Medical Center 1-2 days per week (weekdays only). The Data Analyst position exists to support the design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of Gastroenterology Quality Improvement and Patient Safety programs focused on endoscopy quality, colorectal cancer prevention, and endoscopic education. This role integrates advanced data analytics, data systems management, and implementation science to ensure that high-quality data are collected, structured, analyzed, visualized, and translated into actionable insights to support learning health system initiatives across VA sites The incumbent supports national audit-and-feedback initiatives to improve colonoscopy quality and patient safety, including performance benchmarking and simulation-based mastery learning programs. Working independently or under general direction from the Principal Investigator, the Data Analyst manages complex analytic and reporting workflows across multiple concurrent national initiatives. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining analytic datasets and database structures; building and managing dashboards and data visualizations; conducting statistical and computational analyses; overseeing data quality assurance processes; and generating reports to inform feedback, shared learning, and program evaluation. The position requires experience conducting complex analytical studies, interpreting results, and managing large datasets using statistical programming languages such as SAS, SQL, R, or Python. Experience with data visualization tools such as Microsoft Power BI, familiarity with relational databases and electronic health record–derived data, and proficiency in project management principles related to analytic planning, workflow optimization, and data governance are essential. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $34.48 - $74.04 (Hourly Rate). Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and 1 year of related experience and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Demonstrated experience with data management, data analysis, and database development in research, quality improvement, or healthcare settings
  • Experience with database building, analysis, and data management with one or more of the following: Stata, SASS/SPSS, SQL, and Teleform programming platforms
  • Experience working with relational databases and/or electronic health record–derived data
  • Experience developing reports, dashboards, or data visualizations to communicate analytic findings
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly present complex analytic findings to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple analytic projects simultaneously, and meet established deadlines
  • High attention to detail and ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to work on site at the San Francisco VA Medical Center 1-2 days per week (weekdays only)

Nice To Haves

  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in research data analysis, healthcare analytics, quality improvement, or health services research
  • Prior experience designing and enhancing data collection instruments, analytic datasets, and reporting structures to support evaluation and publication
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain systems that support data integrity, validation, and quality assurance processes
  • Experience working with electronic medical records and extracting structured or semi-structured clinical data for analytic purposes
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare quality measurement frameworks
  • Familiarity with healthcare data privacy, security standards, and institutional data governance practices (e.g. HIPAA-compliant data handling)
