Educational Alliance’s Community Schools & Youth Development (CSYD) program delivers high-quality youth development programs throughout the Lower East Side. These services are integrated into the school day, after school programs, and summer enrichment opportunities. Partnering with several NYC public schools, CSYD collaborates with the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), NYC Office of Community Schools (OCS), The Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), and local school communities to meet the needs of young people and their families in all circumstances. Our team of social workers ensures social-emotional learning is embedded in our work, providing individualized care and attention when needed The Dance Activity Specialist creates a vibrant, inclusive, and safe environment by leading engaging dance classes, supporting positive behavior with respect, and building strong relationships with participants and their families. This role includes planning developmentally appropriate dance lessons, offering individualized feedback, collaborating with CSYD staff and leadership, and maintaining studio equipment while ensuring the health, confidence, and overall well‑being of every dancer.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; at least one year of professional experience working with youth. Some college coursework in dance, education, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of formal dance training, with experience across a wide range of dance styles and techniques preferred.
  • Prior experience teaching, coaching, or leading children or adolescents in a classroom, studio, or recreational setting.
  • Familiarity with multicultural dance styles, traditions, and historical contexts.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate and perform the physical movements and activities required for dance instruction.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to motivate, encourage, and inspire students of varying skill levels.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health, safety, and overall well‑being of all dancers throughout the program.
  • Manage adolescent behavior with respect, maturity, compassion, and positive reinforcement.
  • Build strong, supportive relationships with dancers and their families.
  • Educate and guide students in a variety of dance styles, techniques, and movement foundations.
  • Plan and lead engaging, developmentally appropriate dance lessons that support skill growth and creativity.
  • Maintain a safe and organized studio environment during all classes and activities.
  • Provide constructive, encouraging feedback to help students refine technique and gain confidence.
  • Collaborate with program staff to create a positive, inclusive learning atmosphere.
  • Maintain dance equipment and ensure the studio or teaching space remains clean, orderly, and ready for use.
