About The Position

Under the guidance of the Lab Supervisor, the Cytology Technologist properly maintains the daily workload of the histology department. This position requires that the individual be qualified to perform high-complexity testing according to CLIA regulations. The qualified individual must be meticulous and methodical in practices, due to the often small, irretrievable nature of the specimens processed in a histology laboratory. It is the responsibility of the laboratory director to determine whether an individual’s education, training and experience satisfied the requirements herein.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, allied health technologies or science.
  • 1-year experience in cytology preferred.
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Must have a degree in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution in accordance with CLIA.
  • Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from the IERF (International Education Research Foundation).
  • United States educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript.
  • Cytotechnologist (CT) license/registration/certification.
  • CPR preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate technical competency in performing accurate diagnoses of Non Gyn, urine and FNA cytology specimens.
  • Perform microscopic evaluation of prepared cytologic specimens and engage with all aspects of the cytology specimen workflow including receiving, accessioning, processing, staining, cover-glass mounting, resulting and reporting.
  • Provide assistance with fine-needle aspirations and core biopsy.
  • Perform initial cytological evaluation of non-gynecological specimen preparations including FNA and special stains.
  • Perform slides onsite in clinic for necessary procedures.
  • Provide processing guidance to the specimen processors.
  • Process specimens as needed to be sent to reference lab.
  • Basic troubleshooting of Pathology procedures and Pathology instrumentation.
  • Promote proper communication and chain of custody within DMG and other Medical Institutions.
  • Accession pathology case numbers to identify specific patient encounters.
  • Send out specimens to reference labs or other clinical institutions for consultation.
  • Fill out maintenance logs daily to ensure machines are working at optimal function and proper laboratory conditions.
  • Investigate and support RL6 investigations.
  • Effectively report and investigate patient safety incidents, medical errors and potential risks in the facility.
  • Assist with identification and implementation of corrective action where appropriate.
  • Investigate issues such as turn-around-times with the lab, problems receiving supplies, patient issues and concerns, and forward these issues to the correct leadership.
