Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Pay Range: $52 - $57

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree; graduated from an approved Cytotechnology program as outlined in CLIA 88
  • Must qualify as a Cytotechnologist under CLIA 88
  • ASCP (CT) Certification is required
  • Minimum of 1-year cytotechnology experience screening gynecological and non-gynecological specimens.

  • Experience performing fine needle aspirations, strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Microscopically examines human cellular samples from various body sites in accordance with departmental procedures and policies.
  • Considers clinical history of the patient, marks pertinent findings; makes final cytologic interpretation for gynecologic cell samples which are within normal limits.
  • Makes the preliminary cytologic interpretation of non-gynecologic samples and abnormal gynecologic samples; performs quality control checks; teaches cytopathologic modalities to residents, fellows, students, and new hires.
  • Assists with various research projects; performs other related duties.
  • Assists with Fine Needle Aspirates (FNA) on a frequent or daily basis.
  • Makes accurate final cytologic interpretation for GYN cell samples which are within normal limits and makes preliminary cytologic interpretation for abnormal cell types. Thoroughly examines cell samples considering various diagnostic possibilities; taking into account specimen adequacy, normal cellular patterns, presence of microorganisms, atypical cells of undetermined significance, premalignant changes, benign and malignant neoplasms, cellular response to therapeutic agents, etc.
  • Renders a cytologic interpretation using recognized cytopathologic/histopathologic terminology. Reads previous patient history, assesses age and other patient details to compare with microscopic findings.
  • Determines suitability and assumes responsibility for specimens, making markings, ordering special stains, review of identification and adheres to established quality control guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA), provides on-site evaluation of adequacy. Triages the specimen for ancillary tests (FLOW cytometry, cultures, molecular tests, etc.). Maintaining a professional partnership with assigned care providers, procedure room staff and patients.
  • Successfully maintains credentials, participates in ASCP annual proficiency testing (passing score 90 or above). Accurately records slide interpretation results, number of slides (averaging at least 6 slides per hour, not to exceed slide limit set by Director or State/Regulatory guidelines for slide count/time spent in a 24-hour period.
  • Instructs others, including residents, fellows, staff, students & visitors. Screens slides alongside of training at double-headed microscope. Serves as JH representative at seminars, workshops and other educational events or hospital committees.
  • Assigned with preventative maintenance and other laboratory tasks, as assigned.
