Job Description Summary: Responsible for providing accurate information relating to the practice of cytological screening. Examines microscopically all gynecologic cytology specimens. Evaluates and reviews all non-gynecological cytology specimens. Complies with all standards and requirements of all regulatory, certification and accrediting agencies as outlined in departmental policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • CMIAC - Cytotechnologist Membership in the International Academy of Cytology - American Society for Clinical Pathology, SCT - SCT - State of Ohio
  • Field of Study: chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science AND possess Certification as a CT (ASCP), scat (ASCP) or CT (CMIAC).
  • ORA Bachelor of science degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science AND a graduate of a CAHEA approved school of Cytotechnology AND successfully pass a certifying examination within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs independent microscopic examination of all specimens; assesses adequacy of all specimens; identifies and marks abnormal findings. Identifies and is responsible for final patient reports on all negative gynecologic specimen to the pathologist. Requires in-depth knowledge of complex cellular specimens, physiologic factors affecting those specimens, the effect of numerous medications, and medical treatment of cells, and the ability to correlate all of the above with clinical data. Enters results into computer for reporting.
  • Assists pathologists and other physicians in fine needle aspirations performed in a wide variety of physical and clinical settings; uses independent judgement concerning optimal preparation of these medically significant specimens.
  • Provides information to physicians and nursing personnel regarding interpretation of patient results. Performs correlation studies of discordant cytological and histologic results and maintains documentation of the reviews.
  • The Cytotechnologist is directly affected by rapidly advancing technology, new and changing concepts/terminology and increasing governmental regulation. Thus, the technologist must remain current in the field by attending meetings and seminars for the purpose of continuing education.
  • The technologist serves in a teaching function by instructing new personnel and by providing information to other hospital personnel. As a High Reliability Organization (HRO), responsibilities require focus on safety, quality and efficiency in performing job duties.
