About The Position

Fairview is seeking a Cytotechnologist at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank. This facility is part of an integrated academic health care system, comprising two hospitals and adult specialty clinics, and is the flagship facility of Fairview. The position is a 1.0 FTE (80 hours every two weeks), day shift, Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30pm, with no weekends or major holidays. The Cytotechnologist functions independently, performing professional laboratory practices, including testing and evaluating specimens for malignant, pre-malignant, and infectious diseases from various body sites. The role involves problem resolution, interpretation of results, correlation of clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other conditions affecting test results. The Cytotechnologist also collaborates with laboratory customers to promote satisfaction and participates in laboratory performance improvement activities.

Requirements

  • B.S./B.A. in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes qualifying as high complexity testing personnel as specified in CLIA ’88.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situation.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Must have good manual dexterity.
  • Applicant should possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification • ASCP - Cytologist (CT) -or- • ASCP - Specialist in Cytology (SCT) within 1 Year
  • Applicant must be eligible to achieve GYN Cytology Proficiency Testing within 1 Year

Responsibilities

  • Follows established guidelines to process specimens and prioritize work.
  • Assesses integrity of all specimens for testing.
  • Recognizes and marks infectious, atypical and abnormal changes in GYN and non-GYN specimens. Recognizes age-specific reference ranges.
  • Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them
  • Acts as a resource for problem solving, action steps and troubleshooting for lab procedures and unexpected events in lab operations.
  • Evaluates cytological processing, screening, and results of both GYN and non-GYN specimens for quality and accuracy and initiates appropriate intervention as need.
  • Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver/pathologist.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs.
  • Recognizes and communicates values and trends that exceed the QC decision levels. Takes action to resolve and consults with supervisor as needed. (i.e. logs, daily worksheets, individual workload records, computer reports).
  • Participates in the lab performance improvement program by collecting data, reviewing the results and implementing action step recommendations.
