The Cytotechnologist independently performs routine and special procedures on patient specimens. This role involves microscopically screening gynecologic and non-gynecologic slides containing cells from all body sites, including utilizing imager technology, and meeting minimum screening output standards. The position also requires preparing and processing specimens, assisting pathologists, radiologists, and clinicians with fine needle aspirates, as needed, following departmental policies and safety guidelines. The Cytotechnologist is responsible for operating, calibrating, checking, and maintaining instrumentation, as well as recognizing and addressing problems with quality control and test procedures to ensure quality clinical information. Additionally, the role involves participating in continuing educational programs, assisting in training other healthcare providers, maintaining a clean work area, ensuring adequate supplies, and successfully completing annual proficiency testing. The individual will also select specimens for pathologist review, quality control, and quality assurance.
