Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree with specialization in Cytotechnology or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in Cytology.
  • Completion of one year of formal training in an ASCP approved Cytotechnology Program.

Responsibilities

  • Microscopically examine cells of human body to determine their normality or abnormality.
  • Execute a variety of laboratory tests and analyses to confirm findings.
  • Study cells including pap smears, non-gyn specimens and FNA's.
  • Assist in follow-up procedures on all abnormal cases.
  • Utilize various types of equipment necessary for the successful operation of the laboratory.
  • Prepare individual reports on specimens screened.
  • Present lectures to Pathology Residents and Cytotechnologists.
  • Re-screen Resident cases, explaining any errors or omissions they may have made in interpreting cells.
  • Assist in preparing teaching materials for Pathology Residents.
