About The Position

The Cytology Prep Technician is responsible for performing all stages of sample processing, screening, and resulting of gynecological and non-gynecological cytology. This role includes participating in the assessment of specimen adequacy during fine needle aspiration procedures.

Requirements

• Must meet education requirements defined by New York State Department of Education for a Medical Laboratory Technician.
• Must have current license as Medical lab technician with New York State Department of Education.
• Preparatory experience in a laboratory preferred.
• Must be able to work independently.
• Must be able to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
• Must be able to triage workload.
• Must have excellent communication skills and be able to work well with others.

Responsibilities

• Receipt and acceptance of Cytology specimens.
• Accession gynecological and non-gynecological specimens.
• Perform all stages of specimen processing according to established procedures.
• Prepare gyn specimens utilizing the Thin Prep processor.
• Prepare non-gyn specimens utilizing established protocols.
• Stain gyn and non-gyn microscope slides on automated stainer using departmental staining protocols.
• Coverslip stained slides.
• Hold or forward specimens for Molecular Testing (HPV and/or Thyroid testing).
• Store all fresh fluid and specimens in refrigerator at all times except for during processing.
• Keep all processed and residual non-gyn specimens in refrigerator.
• Keep all gyn thin prep vials after processing for at least 6 weeks.
• Discard chemical waste according to established protocols and procedures.
• Stock cyto preparatory room and the fine needle aspiration cart.
• Participate in fine needle aspiration procedures for on-site assessment of specimen adequacy.
• Maintain accurate temperature documentation.
• Maintain equipment and reagent solutions.
• Order supplies as needed.
• Other clinical and technical duties as required.
