The cytotechnologist is responsible for preparing and screening all cytologic specimens, assisting on fine needle procedures and interpreting findings under the direction of a pathologist as described in the regulatory standards. The cytotechnologist follows laboratory policies and procedures in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, CLIA. The cytotechnologist determines that test results meet requirements of the quality control program and if not met, repeats test and ensures results are approved for reporting following department policy and maintaining all necessary records and documentation. The cytotechnologist is expected to utilize critical thinking skills and complex problem solving in the resolution of clinical and instrument problems.
