Key Position Details: 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two-week pay period) 8-hour day shift from 9:00A - 5:30P Every 4th weekend rotation Job Description: Trains in a high complexity testing laboratory for up to twelve months to fulfill requirements for the ASCP Board of Certification Exam for Technologist in cytogenetics. Training includes primary cell culture and harvest techniques, slide preparation and staining, chromosome analysis by microscopy and image analysis, and molecular techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and microarray. CLIA Role: Testing Personnel Moderate complexity testing Testing Personnel High Complexity testing. Principle Responsibilities Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures to level trained. Performs self-study in preparation for taking the board of certification (BOC) exam for Cytogenetic Technologist. Performs all analytic and post-analytic processes in the clinical cytogenetic lab. Prepares specimens for culture, harvest, slide preparation and staining, FISH processing, and analysis. Performs cytogenetic analysis, including digital imaging analysis, and documents results. Correlates analysis results with patient’s reason-for-referral, previous studies, related family studies as applicable and additional pathology/test results as available. Evaluates results for accuracy. Performs and documents required & advanced instrument maintenance, and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action. Ensures appropriate record retention. Performs proficiency testing as assigned. Performs and documents required reagent preparation and quality control; takes remedial action. Ensures appropriate record retention. Accurate and timely processing of processes. Performs all aspects of specimen management, including confirmation of patient identity and labeling of specimens and aliquots. Assesses and performs pre-analytic processes and documents all sub-optimal situations. Identifies and assesses unique specimen situations and reacts effectively. Evaluates patient's orders for completeness and follows up as directed. Performs processing with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies. Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements. Stocks, rotates and requests supplies as assigned to ensure proper availability in the work area. Performs various clerical duties. Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects, or committees as assigned. Assists in the training of employees and students. Performs proficiency testing as assigned. Assists in Direct Observations of staff for annual competency program. CLIA defined responsibilities: § 493.1425 Standard; Testing personnel responsibilities. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university or Bachelor's degree in biological science or chemistry, or a bachelor's degree including 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of college course work in the biological, chemical, and/or medical sciences from a regionally accredited college/university or Master's degree or Doctorate in genetics or molecular biology from an accredited college/university
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1423 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1491 Technologist qualifications on or before February 28, 1992
  • Cytogenetics, CG (ASCP) certification is required within 6 months of completing clinical laboratory training in the Cytogenetic Technologist Trainee position
