About The Position

Cytogenetics Technologist Day Shift Brigham and Women's Hospital Summary The Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory handles approximately 8,000 specimens per year, performing the following testing: chromosome analysis, fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) and microarray analysis. High complexity testing includes a diverse set of requirements for reporting and specimen handling and follows National Patient Safety Goals, OSHA, CLIA and Joint Commission Regulations. Under supervision, this individual will process specimen and/or performs cytogenetic analysis to assess the chromosomal state of patient samples. Duties vary by assignment (chromosome, FISH and/or microarray analysis) but each of these areas requires analysis, interpretation and accurate recording of test results within strict time constraints. Standard Operating Procedure protocols must be followed.

Requirements

  • Education Bachelor's Degree Biological Sciences required or Bachelor's Degree Clinical Laboratory Sciences required
  • Experience working in clinical cytogenetics.
  • Responsible worker.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with computers (including use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc.).
  • Visual acuity (must be able to distinguish colors).
  • Organized, detail-oriented and able to keep meticulous records.
  • Respectful of patient confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • CG (ASCP) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) preferred
  • 1-2 year preferred

Responsibilities

  • Log in samples and review submitted clinical data to allow appropriate pre-analytic triage of specimens.
  • Perform assigned tissue culture and wet lab duties, and all aspects of specimen processing.
  • Initiate and maintain cell cultures using sterile techniques.
  • Analyze metaphases using brightfield microscopy, records raw data and prepares final karyograms.
  • Perform DNA isolation and labeling, hybridization, washing and chip scanning, and organize, interpret and annotate genomic data.
