About The Position

The Cybersecurity Analyst position at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) involves performing cybersecurity-related activities to support APL's unclassified secure enclave. The role is critical for ensuring compliance with cybersecurity standards and protecting sensitive information. The analyst will monitor network traffic, conduct system scans, and provide reports on vulnerabilities and compliance, contributing to the overall mission of APL and the University of Washington.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Security or related field.
  • At least two years of experience as an IT Systems Engineer, System Administrator, or Cybersecurity Professional.
  • Experience with system vulnerability scanning utilities (e.g., Tenable Security Center, Nessus).
  • Experience with network logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Graylog).
  • Experience with antivirus and endpoint protection products (e.g., Windows Defender, FortiClient).
  • Familiarity with NIST 800-171 and/or 800-53 standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows (server and endpoint).
  • Experience with Linux (server and endpoint).
  • Experience with macOS.
  • Scripting experience (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).
  • Experience with revision management tools (Gitlab, Git, SVN).
  • Knowledge of firewalls (Pfsense/FortiGate) and IDS/IPS (Suricata, Snort).
  • Familiarity with forensic network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcpdump).
  • Understanding of security concepts and practices such as defense-in-depth and encryption.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze system scans for vulnerabilities and compliance, providing remediation plans.
  • Utilize network traffic analysis tools to detect anomalous events and maintain dashboards.
  • Monitor literature for known vulnerabilities and recommend cybersecurity tools.
  • Run reports on system and user activity, contacting users for updates on inactivity.
  • Document and communicate findings clearly to IT team members and management.
