The Cybersecurity Analyst at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is responsible for performing cybersecurity-related activities within the unclassified secure enclave. This role involves monitoring network traffic, conducting system scans for vulnerabilities, and ensuring compliance with cybersecurity standards. The analyst will work closely with IT teams to enhance the security posture of APL's IT infrastructure, contributing to the overall mission of the laboratory and the university.

  • Analyze system scans using industry-standard tools for vulnerabilities and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide assessments of threat levels for vulnerabilities and devise remediation plans.
  • Utilize network traffic analysis tools to provide alerts for anomalous events.
  • Build and maintain dashboards for visual inspection and create automated alert functionality.
  • Run regular reports of system and user activity, reporting on findings that exceed inactivity periods.
  • Document and communicate findings clearly to IT team members and management.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Security or related field.
  • At least two years of experience as an IT Systems Engineer, System Administrator, or Cybersecurity Professional.
  • Experience with system vulnerability scanning utilities (e.g., Tenable Security Center, Nessus).
  • Experience with network logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Graylog).
  • Experience with NIST 800-171 and/or 800-53 standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows (server and endpoint).
  • Experience with Linux (server and endpoint).
  • Experience with macOS.
  • Experience with scripting or other languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).
  • Experience with firewalls (Pfsense/FortiGate).
  • Experience with forensic network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcpdump, nmap).
