The Cyber & Information Security Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking an undergraduate student intern to assist with cybersecurity and information assurance tasks. This role supports the ARL's mission to develop innovative solutions for the Navy, Department of Defense, and Intel Community. The internship offers hands-on experience in compliance enforcement, security administration, and technical writing, among other responsibilities, while working in a collaborative research environment.

  • Assist with compliance enforcement
  • Configure and administer Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems
  • Manage vulnerabilities and conduct audits
  • Perform security checks and documentation updates
  • Engage in automation and process improvement
  • Conduct technical writing for policies and procedures
  • Review hardware and software for compliance and security
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program in Information and Cyber Security, Information Science and Technology, or Computer Science/Engineering
  • Familiarity with defensive cyber tools such as Firewalls, SIEM, XDR/EDR, CASB, FIM, IDS/IPS
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals
  • Basic system administration and troubleshooting skills
  • Scripting experience (bash, python, etc.)
  • Knowledge of compliance or auditing standards, particularly NIST documentation (e.g., 800-171, 800-53) and STIG
  • Experience with technical writing
  • Knowledge of security administration best practices
  • Familiarity with vulnerability management tools
