About The Position

Riverside Research is an independent National Security Nonprofit dedicated to research and development in the national interest. We provide high-end technical services, research and development, and prototype solutions to some of the country’s most challenging technical problems. All Riverside Research opportunities require U.S. Citizenship. Position Overview Riverside Research’s Secure and Resilient Systems group is seeking a full-time summer intern to support the development of system-level software in Boston, MA. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside a team of experienced computer scientists and cybersecurity professionals on cutting-edge technology initiatives. Interns will contribute to projects related to independent research and development (IRAD) as well as customer-funded contracts, with a strong focus on cyber and systems security. Throughout the internship, you will gain hands-on experience and develop a deep understanding of software-hardware interactions, building valuable skills in secure systems development.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related major
  • Ability to work collaboratively on speculative research projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with C/C++, Python, Rust, and/or Assembly
  • Exposure to Linux or Unix-like systems scripting
  • Experience with operating systems/real-time operating systems
  • Foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles, including confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authentication
  • Ability to apply mathematical reasoning to analyze complex problems, develop models, or evaluate quantitative data
  • Desire to be exposed to the following domains: security software engineering and/or general low-level system engineering
  • Ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff and peers in the group and across Riverside Research

Responsibilities

  • Work on real-world R&D and contract-driven projects
  • Develop technical fluency in cyber and systems security
  • Document and communicate design decisions, technical challenges, and progress to technical program management
  • Build tools and/or capabilities in languages like C/C++, Python, etc.
  • Collaborate with team members on debugging programs, designing systems, reviewing papers, etc.
