About The Position

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is seeking individuals to assist sworn personnel in maintaining order and security in custody detention facilities, station jails, or court lockup facilities. This position functions as para-professional support to sworn personnel, requiring independent judgment and initiative under supervision. Incumbents will initially be assigned to a custody facility, assisting in observing inmates and supervising their activities. Responsibilities include monitoring inmate movement, processing inmates for court appearances, and ensuring compliance with regulations. After a competent performance rating, incumbents may be assigned to different facilities based on their experience.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent proficiency.
  • Valid California class 'C' driver license or alternative transportation method.
  • Good general physical condition, free from medical conditions affecting job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in supervising the conduct of inmates in various settings.
  • Instruct and oversee the work of inmate groups in operational and rehabilitative activities.
  • Operate main or dormitory control booths.
  • Process inmates for court appearances.
  • Perform administrative duties such as scheduling and maintaining records.
  • Control access to attorney rooms and visiting areas.
  • Fingerprint and photograph inmates.
  • Issue visitor passes and employee identification cards.
  • Obtain criminal history information and update inmate classification.
  • Interview inmates for classification purposes.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Maintain sanitary conditions within the facility.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding inmates.
  • Inspect court lockup and detention areas.
  • Collect DNA from inmates as required.
