At MICA, we empower our employees to use their talent in a variety of ways. The Custodian position is responsible for ensuring that assigned areas are properly cleaned daily, maintaining compliance with managers and/or the shift Building Services Supervisor, and ensuring custodial closets are neat and organized. The role involves keeping the buildings free of trash and debris, reporting supply needs and unsafe conditions, and securing windows and doors before exiting a room. The custodian will provide custodial services, including trash and recycling, daily cleaning, special events support, and other building services needs for all MICA buildings, ensuring a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors.
  • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and dust draperies and blinds.
  • Empty wastebaskets and recycling containers.
  • Transport trash and waste to disposal areas.
  • Clean in preparation for events set up in auditorium or exhibit galleries.
  • Clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, offices, restrooms, elevators, stairways, exhibit galleries, exterior of exhibit cases, stairwells, entrances and exits, storage rooms, and other work areas.
  • Clean and polish permanent fixtures, various surfaces, and trim.
  • Spot mop or dry mop tile floors almost daily, auto-scrub monthly.
  • Clean stairwells at a minimum of three times each week.
  • Dust lighting, windows, blinds, and draperies twice per week.
  • Vacuum offices three times per week.
  • Clean behind computers in labs/classrooms/offices.
  • Keep entrances clean and free of trash, dirt, etc., and clean door windows daily.
  • Dust HVAC filter returns once per month.
  • Clean windows on the inside and outside of the first floor only, and inside windows on other floors.
  • Assist with major cleaning projects when scheduled.
  • Clean restrooms, perform heavy trash removal, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and restocking restroom supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or GED, with relevant experience OR 5 years experience in janitorial or housekeeping services.
  • Stable work or education history with excellent attendance record.
  • Ability to perform basic math as well as read, write, and speak English to understand and communicate written/verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the supervisor and co-workers.
  • Ability to use or learn how to use a PC and read/send email.
  • Ability to use or learn how to use a two-way radio.
  • Willing to learn to use heavy floor care equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on ladders.
  • Basic knowledge of common safety practices and OSHA regulations.
  • 2-5 years of related experience or a combination of 5 years of experience and training.
  • Prior experience working on a college campus.
  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
