At MICA, we empower our employees to use their talent in a variety of ways. The Custodian position is responsible for ensuring that assigned areas are properly cleaned daily, maintaining cleanliness and organization in custodial closets, and ensuring that buildings are free of trash and debris. The role involves reporting to the Building Services Supervisor and complying with their directives. The custodian will provide custodial services, including trash and recycling management, daily cleaning, and support for special events, all while ensuring a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors.
  • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and dust draperies and blinds.
  • Empty wastebaskets and recycling containers.
  • Transport trash and waste to disposal areas.
  • Clean in preparation for events set up in auditorium or exhibit galleries.
  • Clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, offices, restrooms, elevators, stairways, exhibit galleries, and other work areas.
  • Clean and polish permanent fixtures, various surfaces, and trim.
  • Spot mop or dry mop tile floors almost daily and auto-scrub monthly.
  • Clean stairwells at least three times each week.
  • Dust lighting, windows, blinds, and draperies twice per week.
  • Vacuum offices three times per week.
  • Clean behind computers in labs/classrooms/offices.
  • Keep entrances clean and free of trash and dirt.
  • Dust HVAC filter returns once per month.
  • Clean windows on the inside and outside of the first floor and inside windows on other floors.
  • Assist with major cleaning projects when scheduled.
  • Clean restrooms, perform heavy trash removal, and restock restroom supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or GED, with relevant experience OR 5 years experience in janitorial or housekeeping services.
  • Stable work or education history with excellent attendance record.
  • Ability to perform basic math and communicate in English.
  • Ability to use or learn how to use a PC and read/send email.
  • Ability to use or learn how to use a two-way radio.
  • Willingness to learn to use heavy floor care equipment.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on ladders.
  • Basic knowledge of common safety practices and OSHA regulations.
  • 2-5 years of related experience or a combination of 5 years of experience and training.
  • Prior experience working on a college campus.
  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
