The Bureau of Operations is responsible for Citywide management of the District Health facilities across all five boroughs, encompassing over 300,000 square feet of property. It provides infrastructure and general business services to the agency to support the effective and efficient delivery of public health services, including vital support to the Public Health Laboratory and District Health Centers. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department), established in 1805, is the oldest and largest health department in the U.S. Its mission is to safeguard and improve the health of every NYC resident, fostering a city where everyone can achieve optimal health. The department offers a wide array of programs and services focusing on food and nutrition, anti-tobacco support, chronic disease prevention, HIV/AIDS treatment, family and child health, environmental health, mental health, and social justice initiatives.
