About The Position

The Bureau of Operations is responsible for Citywide management of the District Health facilities across all five boroughs, encompassing over 300,000 square feet of property. It provides infrastructure and general business services to the agency to support the effective and efficient delivery of public health services, including vital support to the Public Health Laboratory and District Health Centers. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department), established in 1805, is the oldest and largest health department in the U.S. Its mission is to safeguard and improve the health of every NYC resident, fostering a city where everyone can achieve optimal health. The department offers a wide array of programs and services focusing on food and nutrition, anti-tobacco support, chronic disease prevention, HIV/AIDS treatment, family and child health, environmental health, mental health, and social justice initiatives. It serves as the primary population health strategist and policy authority for NYC, with a rich history of public health initiatives and scientific advancements, from addressing the 1822 yellow fever outbreak to the COVID-19 pandemic, making it a global leader in public health innovation and expertise.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings
  • Three years of satisfactory experience for Assignment Level II
  • Four years of satisfactory experience for Assignment Level III and IV

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, damp mops, and wet mops office floors, toilets, corridors, lobbies and other assigned areas
  • Order janitorial supplies
  • Empty waste baskets and dispose of refuse
  • Vacuum rugs and carpets
  • Replace bulbs and fuses
  • Perform shoulder high and high dusting of walls
  • Polish furniture and metal work
  • Maintain lawns and shrubs
  • Operate a low-pressure heating system
  • Enforce safety requirements and protect the building and grounds from vandalism
  • Inspect interior and exterior of assigned building daily, including boilers, elevators and related equipment
  • Replace broken window and door glass
  • Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork flooring, walls, electrical, plumbing and heating systems
  • Assure proper heat, maintenance of pneumatic controls, ejector pits and other electrical or plumbing problems
