Custodians provide custodial services at assigned site(s); ensure an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors; perform a variety of special cleaning operations; and assist in preparing facilities for classroom activities and building events.

  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers, wash windows
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed
  • May set up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  • May strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets
  • Responsible for landscaping and snow removal as necessary
  • Responsible for the security of the building during shifts
  • Other duties assigned by the building administrator or Operations supervisor
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Working knowledge of custodial work, including cleaning methods and materials and the use of custodial equipment equivalent to that gained in at least one year of experience or a combination of education and experience
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, reach and kneel
  • Ability to work at heights, ascend and descend ladders
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation
  • Ability to hear and understand speech
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 pounds
  • Previous experience working in a sanitation, custodial, or maintenance position is preferred, but not required
