About The Position

Under general and limited supervision, perform a wide variety of custodial maintenance duties in order to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment in public buildings. Performs cleaning, housekeeping, and light maintenance of assigned space. SUPERVISION EXERCISED This position exercises no supervision over other employees. IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Sweep and mop floors; vacuum. Dust and clean offices and other work areas. Collect and remove waste. Clean & restock restrooms. Strip and wax floors. Move or lift furniture, boxes, and other materials. Open and close the facility for use and secure the facility for closing. Operate carpet extractor machine and buffers to polish floors. Daily operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle to travel between City facilities in order to complete assigned work. OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Knowledge of tools, chemicals, materials, methods, and best practices used in custodial operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of custodial operations.
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment common to custodial operations.
  • Skill to operate a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum cleaner, carpet machine, and buffer.
  • Ability to maintain a schedule of cleaning and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

  • Ability to perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division’s mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
  • Six (6) months of experience in custodial work is preferred.
  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is preferred.
  • A current valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is preferred.
  • May be required to obtain CJIS Security Awareness Certificate (Level 1 for Police or Airport).
  • May be required to complete and pass a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC for Police or Airport).
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or other non-traditional schedules.
  • Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, and confining work spaces.
  • Exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Medium – lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds
