About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Adult Services Librarian – Operations Supervisor, this position is responsible for cleaning duties, up to 19 hours per week, for the Brookings Public Library. Shifts for this position typically include mornings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of recent custodial experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Must have ability to prioritize job tasks independently.
  • Must have ability to work with sensitive materials in a confidential manner.
  • Must have ability to perform duties safely.
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; this position does not support visa sponsorship.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of the proper use, care and storage of custodial equipment and materials.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand cleaning product labels, drawings and schematics used to mover furniture and equipment.
  • Ability to perform calculations necessary to mix and apply cleaning products in proper application.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with those encountered in the work place.
  • Ability to work under time constraints to meet deadlines in cleaning assigned areas.
  • Ability to observe and report need for repairs.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning of library, offices, kitchens, restrooms, and all related areas.
  • Use a variety of cleaning equipment and materials to sweep and mop floors; vacuum, shampoo and spot clean carpets; strip, polish and wax floors; dust and polish furniture, woodwork and equipment; wash windows and walls.
  • Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and related fixtures including drinking fountains, custodial mop sinks, restroom sinks, mirrors, urinals and toilets.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse and recyclable materials; may pick up litter from grounds surrounding buildings.
  • Replenish disposable supplies such as toilet paper, can liners, soap and paper towels.
  • Maintain cleaning tools, equipment and materials in proper condition.
  • Keep storage closets organized with a neat appearance.
  • Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Move, arrange, setup and take down chairs, table and equipment as needed for cleaning.
  • Clean up after accidents and illnesses.
  • Knowledge of the correct application custodial material and chemicals.
  • Operate custodial equipment and use building maintenance tools and equipment correctly.
  • Operate and make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
  • Follow safe work practices.
  • Identify and report hazardous conditions or items in need of repair.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or when necessary.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards and policies established by the City.
  • Perform other job-related duties as deemed necessary and additional duties, tasks, or responsibilities as assigned.
