About The Position

The Custodian position is responsible for maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds at assigned campuses within the Donna ISD. This role involves implementing and maintaining cleaning schedules, performing minor repairs, managing cleaning supplies, and ensuring the security of the building. The employee must have great physical endurance and be able to operate various cleaning and maintenance equipment. The position requires adherence to safety procedures and district policies, and the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and the community. Employees are employed by the District and may be assigned to any campus as needed, requiring personal transportation.

Requirements

  • Experience in a custodian role focused on building upkeep.
  • Great physical endurance to cover a large space.
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies and the safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent Policies and building and department procedures.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide.
  • Ability to determine weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram or schedule form.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Employee is responsible for their mode of transportation to report to assigned locations.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain established cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and walls.
  • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of materials.
  • Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Regulate, heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to supervisor.
  • Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by supervisor.
  • Operate all tools including Mechanical and electrical equipment entailed to complete work.
  • Assume responsibility for opening and closing building each school day.
  • Oversee procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  • Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor.
  • Maintain personal appearance and hygiene.
  • Wear assigned and required uniform clothing and non-slip shoes.
  • Wear district employees ID badge at all times within the district.
  • Foster a team environment by assisting coworkers with scheduled work.
  • Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work, meetings, and appointments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director, Principal (or designee), Campus Administrator or Department Head.
  • Adhere to Donna ISD Employee Standards of Conduct and Donna ISD Code of Ethics.
  • Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.
