The Custodian is responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment throughout Virginia Union University’s facilities. This role includes performing general cleaning duties, minor maintenance tasks, and supporting a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Custodian plays an essential role in promoting the university’s commitment to health, safety, and cleanliness.

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and other assigned spaces daily.
  • Dust, mop, sweep, vacuum, and polish floors as needed to maintain a neat appearance.
  • Empty wastebaskets and recycling bins, dispose of trash appropriately, and replenish bathroom supplies.
  • Sanitize frequently touched surfaces (e.g., doorknobs, light switches, and handrails) to maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Follow health and safety protocols, including the use of proper cleaning agents and personal protective equipment (PPE) to meet OSHA standards.
  • Assist with setting up tables, chairs, and other equipment for events and gatherings as requested.
  • Perform breakdown and clean-up after events, ensuring spaces are restored to their original condition.
  • Perform regular inspections of assigned areas to ensure cleanliness and safety, reporting any maintenance issues or repairs needed (e.g., leaky faucets, broken fixtures) to the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning requests, such as spills, accidents, and special projects.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Prior custodial or cleaning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds, perform repetitive tasks, and work on feet for extended periods.
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and in accordance with OSHA standards.
  • Occasional evening or weekend shifts may be required for special events or emergencies.
