About the position

Under the direction of unit custodial manager, the Custodian Supervisor will oversee all custodial staff and lead positions on the swing and night shift responsible for planning, developing, and directing activity of custodial department; coordinates the need for staffing, equipment, and supplies; makes recommendations on purchases of supplies and equipment to the department manager. Supervises custodial services for multiple buildings and performs custodial duties during short staffing or when team members are on vacation, to maintain continuity of services to the campus. Manages the campus recycling program.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes needs and determines departmental staffing levels. Participates in the recruitment process.
  • Assists the department manager with ensuring established performance expectations and standards are maintained.
  • Responsible for assigning, delegating, and prioritizing tasks/workload; coordinating schedules and approving leave requests; reviewing work.
  • Conducts regular inspections of areas assigned to custodians. Provides feedback to custodians on how to improve their areas.
  • Makes recommendations to department manager when corrective action is needed and assists manager in implementing corrective action.
  • Delegates additional duties appropriately such as window cleaning, light replacement, and floor care.
  • Supervises and coordinates with the department manager the scheduling of employee required trainings.
  • Encourages staff to attend optional training and recommends the use of the WSU Online Learning System.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Recommends hiring of staff, evaluate job performance of direct reports, and take corrective action if performance is not acceptable.
  • Coordinates schedules.
  • Checks e-mail and events schedule daily; accurately follows through on information.
  • Performs custodial duties when team members are on vacation or during periods of short staffing.
  • Collaborating with the department manager ensures smooth operation of facilities planning and coordination.
  • Assists with the planning and design of event layouts.
  • Consults and resolves problems regarding custodial issues, such as the set-up of custodial services for new departments, spaces, and buildings, as well as maintenance, security, and potential safety hazards.
  • Coordinates building moves.
  • Maintain and facilitate communications with department manager, leads and custodians 1 & 2 striving to maintain transparency.
  • Maintain key security.
  • Coordinate safety meetings and trainings with the department manager.
  • Assists the department manager with enforcing safety rules and regulations.
  • Assists department manager with accident investigations and complete accident reports, while keeping department manager appraised of incidents or close calls.
  • In collaboration with department manager assists with budget control for labor, materials, and supplies.
  • Analyzes need and makes recommendation of purchases to department manager for custodial supplies, equipment, equipment parts, and fluorescent, compact fluorescent, metal halide, and incandescent light for interior of all campus buildings.
  • Makes recommendations for new or additional custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Works with Leads to ensure most cost-effective methods are used to adequately perform custodial tasks.
  • Prepare reports related to custodial services, such as building equipment and supply inventories, custodial procedures, event logs, and recycling data.
  • Maintains records, reports, and building supply inventory.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities of subordinates as required or assigned.
  • Coordinates and performs snow removal.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • One year experience supervising or directing others in large-scale housekeeping, janitorial, general or building maintenance or custodial work; OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in the care and maintenance of commercial PVCT tile, hard flooring, and commercial carpeting.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain focused on goals while remaining calm during stressful personnel matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Proven ability to engage with diverse personalities and readiness to address conflicts with empathy and understanding.
  • Experience managing inventory related to custodial services.
  • Available to work weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Proven ability to drive change effectively while maintaining a calm and stable environment within the department.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years experience supervising or directing others in large-scale housekeeping, janitorial, general or building maintenance or custodial work.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, develop and implement training for custodian staff and effectively manage personnel.
  • Experience which demonstrates strong computer skills, including proficiency working with Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Experience that highlights a strong attention to detail, coupled with a continuous improvement mindset, including the application of lean principles.
  • Experience in collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, skilled at navigating conflicts to achieve a positive resolution.
