About The Position

The Custodian (Substitute) position at Penn-Harris-Madison Schools is responsible for maintaining the school buildings in a state of operational excellence, cleanliness, and safety. The custodian ensures that there are no problems or interruptions to the educational process by keeping all assigned areas neat, clean, orderly, well-stocked, and sanitary. The role involves a variety of cleaning responsibilities, restroom maintenance, opening duties, activity setup and cleanup, and other custodial tasks as needed. The custodian reports to multiple supervisors including the Director of Custodial Operations and the Building Administrator.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Excellent work habits and attendance record.
  • Must pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  • Must remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and dispose of trash, replace can liners, and wipe out waste cans in classrooms, offices, and hallways daily.
  • Clean, vacuum, and mop entrances and hallways.
  • Sanitize and disinfect all high-touch areas and straighten desks and chairs.
  • Clean and disinfect student desks or tabletops daily.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas and clean spills immediately.
  • Dry/wet mop or scrub non-carpeted areas.
  • Keep doors, glass, and mirrors clean at all times.
  • Dust ledges, shelves, and remove cobwebs.
  • Empty pencil sharpeners daily.
  • Clean blackboards, whiteboards, and trays daily.
  • Dust televisions, computers, and monitors weekly.
  • Clean display cases as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of walls, windows, doors, and other vertical surfaces.
  • Sanitize drinking fountains.
  • Remove recycled materials and dispose of them properly.
  • Clean and store custodial equipment properly.
  • Clean all restroom fixtures daily and maintain supplies.
  • Perform opening responsibilities including disarming the building and setting up traffic cones.
  • Set up, break down, and clean up for activities as needed.
  • Carry communication devices and respond when called.
  • Check emails daily for communications.
  • Perform minor repairs and installations as needed.
  • Complete maintenance work orders and supply orders.
  • Conduct monthly inspections and maintain records.
  • Assist staff, patrons, and community members as needed.
