About The Position

Work involves performing such cleaning tasks as sweeping, mopping, and polishing floors, washing walls and windows, cleaning restrooms, picking up paper, etc. Work may involve operating floor buffers, vacuum cleaners, and sweepers. Work is performed according to established routines and procedures or written or oral instructions. Routine decisions are made based on established procedures. Close supervision is received for new assignments; however, once routine assignments have been learned, they are performed without direct supervision. Work assignments that vary from normal routine may be received occasionally from the supervisor accompanied by oral instructions. However, most work originates as a result of the continuing need for maintenance of public buildings. Work is reviewed by the immediate supervisor by spot checks of work in progress and inspection of completed work.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or its equivalent preferred.
  • At least one year paid work experience doing custodial duties which includes operating large cleaning equipment (floor buffers, power sweepers and waxers, and industrial vacuums) required.
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets County standards.
  • Because the job duties can involve access to secure areas and confidential and/or criminal and prosecutorial information, the selected candidate(s) must possess a good reputation and background which will withstand pre-appointment investigation, that will include finger-print check.
  • Candidates must be free of any felony convictions to be considered for this position.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper safety precautions to be taken when using vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, other custodial equipment, and grass mowers.
  • Ability to perform routine operations involving custodial duties without close supervision.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy manual work.
  • Ability to follow simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to recognize equipment in need of maintenance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, building occupants, and the public
  • Ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, and polishes floors and stairways using vacuum cleaner and buffer as necessary.
  • Washes walls, windows, and woodwork.
  • Empty waste baskets.
  • Dusts, polishes, arranges, and moves furniture and equipment.
  • Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Cleans mirrors, venetian blinds, light fixtures, and drinking fountains.
  • Locks doors, keeping buildings, offices, and restricted areas secure as directed by supervisor.
  • Notifies supervisor in the event of unusual happenings.
  • May assist with shoveling snow and operating sweepers.
  • Develops solutions to work issues that add value for our customers.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works extra hours as required.
  • Performs related work as required.
