About The Position

Springfield Public Schools seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Full-Time (8.0 hpd.) Custodian 1 at various locations to be determined. This position provides custodial services and basic maintenance to ensure the upkeep, cleanliness and safety of school buildings/grounds for students, staff, and community members. Essential Functions Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card
  • Ability to obtain and hold an Oregon Driver license
  • Ability to pass Safe Schools modules and custodial trainings as assigned.

  • Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; modern office practices and procedures; letter writing, correct language usage; cleaning/sanitation methods and strategies appropriate for public education setting; the use and operation of various cleaning/sanitation tools, such as manually powered brooms, mops, vacuums, dusting tools, ladders, and snow shovels as well as mechanically powered tools, such as powered waxing/buffing equipment, auto scrubbers, and leaf blowers; handling, storing, and applying chemical agents; telephone and record keeping/filing systems; computer hardware and software programs and their usage; modern office equipment; safety and first aid practices and procedures.
  • Ability to: understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; operate, maintain, and make adjustments to various types of equipment, as needed; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy; greet stakeholders; maintain appropriate custodial appearance and attire; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies, procedures and other pertinent information; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members and resolves conflict in a professional manner; maintain records; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions; accurately research various information and prepare related reports; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent, and interpret graphs; apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standard situations; understand proper procedures, hand book rules, school schedules (i.e., activity times) and maintain confidentiality with regard to students and staff.
  • Skills to: adapt to working around children; adapt to working around outside community groups; maintain school buildings in a manner acceptable to the general health and safety standards of school buildings; develop a basic understanding of Board Policies and Administrative Regulations, school public relations; the role and function of public schools in the community, and safe operation of mechanical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Completes appropriate log(s), forms and paperwork as required.
  • Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to lead custodian.
  • Reports issues to lead custodian as necessary.
  • Assists other custodial/maintenance personnel, as necessary.
  • Assists in maintaining and cleaning HVAC systems and modifies systems utilizing technology support systems.
  • Performs various building and grounds inspections as directed.
  • Performs basic grounds keeping activities including, but not limited to leaf collection, spreading top dressing (mulch, chips, shavings, etc.), snow and ice removal/abatement, walkway clearing, and drainage maintenance.
  • May perform routine maintenance and makes minor repairs of custodial equipment.
  • Unlock / lock doors, windows, and gates.
  • Turns on/off lights and secures buildings for start/end of day.
  • Cleans, sanitizes areas (i.e. classrooms, halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.), vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, and mops/buffs all types of floor surfaces.
  • Operates and maintains sweepers and other power equipment used in custodial work (buffer, carpet steamer, varnisher, vacuum(s), auto scrubber, and power washer) to ensure they work effectively and safely.
  • Keeps walkways, parking areas and entrances clean and clear of debris.
  • Sets up, takes down and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving and partitions for meetings, athletic events and other District functions as assigned, including weekend events.
  • Washes windows, white boards, chalk boards and walls.
  • Cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metal work and computer screens.
  • Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Collects and empties all recycling and waste containers in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms as well as cleans doors, door handles, sinks, fixtures, panels, and drinking fountains daily.
  • Performs a variety of basic maintenance duties including, but not limited to, unplugging sink drains, door maintenance, and painting.
  • Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Responds to special requests for custodial services from staff members.
  • Other related duties may be assigned.
